November 12, 2024 — East Rutherford, NJ: The New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHOF) at American Dream recently partnered with JerseySTEM to host nineteen middle school students. The young learners explored STEM-related exhibits and learned about the achievements of influential New Jersey scientists and innovators, inspiring them to chase their own STEM goals.

The activities included a hands-on chemistry module led by JerseySTEM mentors Adriana Macris and Karen Wisniewski, an expert in surfactants and cleaning products with experience in Research and Development at Colgate-Palmolive Co. The chemistry module aligned with New Jersey’s middle school science standards (NJSLS in Chemistry-PS1.A and PS1.B). Students engaged in experiments that not only reinforced classroom concepts but also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry.

“The NJHOF hopes to inspire young women to explore careers in STEM by showcasing New Jersey’s trailblazers in those fields, providing students with real-life role models and innovative experiences,” said Ali Genova, Director of Educational Programs at the NJHOF.

Leah Pena, a student participant, expressed her excitement: “I loved the NJ Hall of Fame! I always look forward to chemistry experiments, and this experience will be very helpful when I get to high school. The VR experiences and karaoke were so much fun, too!”

The visit not only engaged the students but also set the groundwork for future collaborations. “We hope to incorporate JerseySTEM visits into our yearly calendar and encourage participation in events related to STEM inductees,” Genova added.
