On Saturday, July 11, the New Jersey Hall of Fame proudly recognized Charlie Inverso as an Everyday Hero, celebrating a lifetime dedicated to growing the game of soccer and creating opportunities for generations of young athletes throughout New Jersey.
For more than four decades, Inverso has exemplified what it means to lead with passion, integrity, and purpose. While his resume is filled with championships and coaching accolades, his greatest legacy lies in the countless lives he has impacted, both on and off the field. Charlie, nominated by New Jersey Youth Soccer, has dedicated his life to improving the lives and playing conditions of thousands of players for the betterment of The Beautiful Game.
A name synonymous with soccer excellence in the Garden State, Inverso has built one of the most accomplished coaching careers in collegiate soccer. During his 24-year tenure as head coach at Mercer County Community College, he compiled an extraordinary 434-46-14 record while leading the program to five NJCAA National Championships. His winning percentage remains the highest in NJCAA men’s soccer history, and his influence helped launch the careers of hundreds of student-athletes who went on to play at four-year colleges, many of whom advanced into coaching and professional soccer.
Inverso later brought that same winning culture to Rider University, where he transformed the men’s soccer program into a perennial contender. During his tenure, the Broncs captured multiple MAAC Championships, made three NCAA Tournament appearances in a four-year span, and reached four consecutive MAAC Championship matches. Along the way, he earned United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors and coached Rider’s first All-Americans in more than four decades.
His impact extends well beyond the collegiate ranks. Inverso has served as a Region I Olympic Development Program goalkeeper coach, helping identify and develop some of the nation’s top young talent. He also served as goalkeeper coach for the U.S. Under-15 Men’s Youth National Team and continues to contribute to the sport as a U.S. Soccer scout, helping shape the future of American soccer.
Yet perhaps his most meaningful contribution has come through Mooch Soccer, the nonprofit organization he co-founded to bring soccer, mentorship, and opportunity to underserved youth in the Trenton area. Since its founding, Mooch Soccer has positively impacted more than 1,000 children, providing a safe and supportive environment where young people can grow both as athletes and as individuals. The program has helped participants earn opportunities at the collegiate, professional, and national team levels, including former participant Matthew Olosunde, who advanced from Trenton youth soccer to Manchester United and the U.S. Men’s National Team.
Charlie Inverso’s career is defined not simply by wins and championships, but by service, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to helping others succeed. His influence can be seen in every player he has coached, every colleague he has mentored, and every community he has strengthened through soccer.
The New Jersey Hall of Fame is honored to recognize Charlie Inverso as an Everyday Hero, an individual whose dedication, leadership, and generosity continue to inspire future generations and demonstrate the extraordinary impact one person can have on a community. Charlie will now live permanently in our Everyday Heroes exhibit at the New Jersey Hall of Fame at American Dream.
