Since joining the Margate School District in 1999, Sherry has dedicated her career to helping students discover their potential and preparing them for success long after they leave her classroom. As an eighth-grade math teacher, she has earned a reputation as one of the best educators in the area, with her algebra classes achieving a 100% passing rate on state examinations.
Margate does not have a high school, so its students attend a variety of high schools throughout the region after eighth grade. Over the years, former students have repeatedly returned to Margate to share stories about their high school experiences. Many have shared that their teachers would recognize them as being from Margate and tell them how Margate students are always among the best prepared. As those students have come to realize, that reputation is not simply because they went to Margate; it is because they had Sherry Scott.
Sherry has even received emails from high school teachers in other districts who have gone out of their way to commend her for how thoroughly she prepared her students for the academic rigor of high school. Her influence is evident not only in the achievements of her students but in the lasting relationships she has built with them and the confidence she instills in every class.
While academic excellence is a hallmark of Sherry’s teaching, her impact extends far beyond mathematics. She brings an incredible energy and enthusiasm to her classroom that radiates through every lesson. Her dedication to her students’ academic success and overall well-being is evident in everything she does. With a constant smile and an unmistakable positivity, Sherry encourages her students to believe in themselves and understand that they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to.
That enthusiasm extends throughout the entire school community. Sherry embraces every opportunity to connect with her students, whether she is dressing up for spirit days, participating in pep rallies and student-versus-teacher games, or coaching the cross country team. She served as a Student Council Advisor for nearly a decade, creating opportunities for students to become engaged leaders and active members of their school community.
Sherry has also been a dedicated advocate for her fellow educators. She served as President of her local association for 11 years before serving as Vice President for 4 years, helping train and support the next generation of leaders. She has been an active member of the negotiating team and has consistently worked to represent and support her colleagues in discussions with the administration.
Her contributions to Margate extend into countless aspects of school life. Known affectionately by her principal as a “walking calendar,” Sherry has become the person everyone can count on to keep things organized. She creates revised school and bell schedules when assemblies, testing, or other changes require adjustments to the school day. She helps organize and plan eighth-grade graduation ceremonies and even created an end-of-year tradition in which eighth-grade students participate in a pickleball tournament alongside their teachers.
Perhaps one of Sherry’s greatest gifts is the support she provides to the people around her. She has always been there for her colleagues, ready to listen, offer advice, lend a hand, or simply provide encouragement when it is needed. Her positivity and dedication have made her not only an exceptional teacher but a trusted colleague and an essential part of the Margate School District community.
After more than 25 years of service, Sherry is retiring this year. While her absence will undoubtedly be felt throughout the school, the impact she has made will continue to be felt through the countless students she taught, the educators she supported, and the community she helped strengthen.
The New Jersey Hall of Fame is honored to recognize Mrs. Sherry Scott as an Everyday Hero. Her extraordinary career demonstrates that the impact of a great teacher reaches far beyond the classroom. Through her passion, leadership, positivity, and unwavering belief in her students, Sherry has helped generations of young people believe in themselves and prepared them to succeed wherever their journeys take them.
Sherry’s school may not be the same without her, but the legacy she leaves behind will last for generations.
