STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF 2024 INDUCTEE DICK BUTTON
The New Jersey Hall of Fame honors the passing of Dick Button, a groundbreaking figure skater, legendary sports commentator, and passionate advocate for his sport. A two-time Olympic gold medalist, five-time world champion, and Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, Button’s influence on figure skating is immeasurable.
Born and raised in Englewood, New Jersey, Button took to the ice at age 12 and, by 16, had already claimed his first U.S. national title. His athletic achievements were nothing short of revolutionary—he was the first skater to land a double axel and a triple jump in competition, and he introduced the now-iconic “flying camel” spin, known today as the “Button Camel.” His dominance on the ice made history, but his contributions extended far beyond his performances.
Following his competitive career, Button brought figure skating into millions of homes through his decades-long tenure as a television commentator. With his signature candor and deep knowledge, he didn’t just describe the sport—he shaped how audiences understood it. “Dick was one of the most important figures in our sport,” said Olympic champion Scott Hamilton. “There wasn’t a skater after Dick who wasn’t helped by him in some way.”
Button’s impact reached beyond the rink. He was vital in promoting professional skating competitions and helping athletes find opportunities after their competitive careers. His sharp wit, honesty, and love for the sport made him a beloved and respected voice in the skating community for over half a century.
His passing comes at a time of profound sorrow for the skating world following the recent tragic loss of members of the U.S. skating community. Our hearts go out to all those mourning during this difficult time.
“I’m glad Dick was able to be here for his induction. He was thrilled,” shared his longtime partner, Dennis Grimaldi. That joy, that passion—for skating, for performance, for life—defined who Dick Button was.
His legacy will live on in every skater who dares to push the boundaries of the sport and in every fan who hears echoes of his voice when watching a skater soar through the air. The New Jersey Hall of Fame is honored to have recognized his extraordinary achievements, and we will forever celebrate his contributions to sports, broadcasting, and the world beyond the rink.
